Healthy Vending: A Trend to Help with New Year’s Resolutions
Apples, yogurt, granola bars…all items to be found in your local vending machine? It’s true! More and more vending machine companies are beginning to offer healthier options for you to snack on at work, at the gym, and at school. While there are plenty of times you want a bag of chips or soda to go along with your healthy sandwich and fruit, we all know too many of those salty or sugary snacks is not a good thing.
It’s nice to see that at least there are more options available for those looking for healthier choices – even if it’s just for that moment and they are craving a candy bar the next. What better way to serve the diverse populations interested in something from the vending machine than to widen the options.
Healthy vending machines have become extremely popular in schools. Parents whose children participate in after school sports of who get to school early have often piped up as saying they wanted the machines removed entirely from the school, because they were unable to control the amount of sugar and candy the kids were choosing to buy. But those machines are a huge source of revenue for schools and they rely on the funds to help pay for necessary and “wish list” items not covered by the budget.
The happy medium that many vendors offered was healthier snack options. Many include fruit and low sugar snack options. Kids get their after school snack, the school keeps the funds, and parents are satisfied. With the success of these machines and choices in schools, they began working their way into other sectors.
Now you often will see a snack and candy machine next to one filled with healthier treats. As with all their machines, the vending companies are interested in keeping it stocked with the things your employees, students, customers, etc. want, so they encourage feedback and want suggestions to help streamline the options they offer so every product is one in high demand. This also helps keep the company’s product loss due to spoilage to a minimum.
One of the biggest excuses for not carrying healthier options is that many of those products need to be refrigerated to keep from spoiling. The solution is that drivers must check back more often to ensure that expiration dates are not exceeded and many of the machines are now refrigerated or have areas which contain perishable foods.
Even in those vending machines loaded with sugary goodness, there are often more sugar-free and low sugar items to be mindful of those whose sweet tooth needs to watch sugar intake. The next time you approach a vending machine for lunch, a snack, or a drink you may be pleasantly surprised to see the snacks you’ve always loved in a vending machine alongside those you wished you could get. Now that the option is available, the only question is what will you choose for a snack today?
